If you’re struggling with toothaches, chewing pain, gum swelling, and other signs of tooth decay, you may need a root canal. Unfortunately, the fact is that root canals have a reputation for being unpleasant and that reputation might have you asking, “How many root canals does the average person have?”

Here at Heroes Dental, we strive to make every visit as comfortable and calm as possible for our patients. Part of the way we do that is by answering any questions you may have about your treatment. You can visit us to learn more in-depth information about root canals, or keep reading to learn how many root canals the average person has.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure meant to help repair severely damaged teeth. During the procedure, the damaged part of the tooth is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and resealed. Often, root canals are followed up with a dental bridge, a device used to fill in the spots left by missing or severely damaged teeth.

Most root canal procedures take between 30 minutes and an hour to complete. You can expect to experience swelling and sensitivity following your procedure, as well as discomfort. You can usually drive home yourself after a root canal, but you might want to consider asking someone to drive you if you have a low pain tolerance.

How Common Are Root Canals?

Because root canals are a treatment for more severe damage, you might expect the procedure to be rare. However, there are at least 15 million root canals performed in the U.S. every year. Root canals are most common among people from the age of 22 to 44, with 12% of U.S. adults having received a root canal at some point in their lives. That still means root canals are relatively uncommon. For reference, between 30% and 50% of adults over 50 have broken a bone.

How Many Root Canals Does the Average Person Have?

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to track down specific figures regarding how many root canals the average person has, but we can make some rough estimates based on the figures we do know. With just 12% of adults receiving a root canal in their lives, that means that 88% of adults will never receive a root canal. That means we can assume that the average person will have between zero and one root canal. However, it’s possible that the figure could be higher given the fact that many of those who do require a root canal will need more than one procedure.

In other words, while we can’t say an exact figure for the average number of root canals per person, we can say that most people will not need a root canal.
