Here at Heroes Dental, we are just as excited for Christmas as you are. But we’re also looking forward to the New Year.
The New Year brings with it the opportunity to turn a new page. It’s a new beginning, that seems oh-so-magical, and brings hope and excitement for the future. That’s why this New Year, we’re looking forward to heroes of all ages making resolutions that will help them to take better care of their teeth and gums.
You’d be surprised by how some of the most common New Year’s resolutions can positively affect your oral health. So, consider sticking to these 5 resolutions in 2017 to give your teeth and gums a boost.
Resolution #1: Getting Organized
A lot of people would like to fix the disorganization of their life by making use of their time in a more efficient and orderly manner. This usually means making plans ahead of schedule and actually sticking to them. One thing that you can add to that schedule is an annual dental exam and cleaning.
If it’s been awhile since you’ve last had an appointment, don’t worry, you aren’t alone. About ⅓ of people in the U.S. don’t visit a dentist. Being organized means making time for taking care of yourself and your health. So…enter that reminder in your phone or place it on your calendar and when January 1st rolls around call up your dentist for an appointment.
Don’t forget about flossing either. If you haven’t built this habit up yet, the New Year is a great time to begin. So get organized and make your teeth and those gums happy.
Resolution #2: Kicking the Habit
Another great resolution many people make is to quit smoking.
In case you weren’t aware, smoking doubles your risk of gum disease, and is really harmful for your entire body in general. Of course you’ll have cravings, so it’s important to find healthy activities you can engage in to get your mind off of smoking. Together with your family doctor you can find ways to help curb the addiction, plus your family is very likely to support you, which means you won’t be alone.
Pick a date, get rid of all the tobacco products in your home, and let your friends and family support you as much as needed. When you succeed in quitting smoking, your gum tissue will have improved its healing abilities, and you’ll be a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry.
Resolution #3: Living Life to the Fullest
The beginning of the New Year brings a certain level of optimism with it and it reminds us to take advantage of the life we have by enjoying it to the fullest extent that we can. This means we have to let go of insecurities, even those related to our smiles and teeth.
Instead of letting your smile hold you back this upcoming year, take the leap and invest in cosmetic dentistry. At Heroes Dental, we offer a variety of cosmetic solutions including veneers, teeth whitening, braces, and more. So enjoy the freedom of a brand new smile that will make you more social, adventurous, and provide you the opportunity to live life to the fullest.
Resolution #4: Eating Better
Eating better usually means cutting back on sugars and acidic foods that can ruin your teeth. In fact, a study published in BMC Public health found a direct link between the amount of sugar a person eats and the amount of tooth decay they had.
When you make the resolution to eat better, you’re giving your teeth a fighting chance to stay healthy for years to come. If you decide to follow this resolution this year, consider dairy products as snacks because they’re high in calcium (which your teeth need).
Resolution #5: Losing Weight
This one is definitely tied into our 4th resolution; if you’re focused on losing weight (which means eating better) you’ll likely cut back on sugar foods, sodas, carbs, and a plethora of unhealthy foods that can do damage to your teeth. So, while you’re losing all that weight, you’ll also stop tooth decay and tooth loss caused by acids and carbs that contribute to enamel damage.
